Kofi Annan Shield 2010 UNYA ACT's debating competition for secondary school students, the Kofi Annan Shield is approaching! The Shield is a model United Nations Security Council where students debate in pairs. The winning teams will debate in a final (date to be announced), and two teams will be chosen to represent the ACT at the Evatt Trophy. The Kofi Annan Shield is a prestigious debating competition for students in years nine to twelve. Students enter in teams of two and represent a country on the UN Security Council where they will speak about current issues and how the international community plans to tackle them in a mock UN style debate. There are three rounds (Monday 16th August, Friday 20th August and Wednesday 25th August), each beginning at 6pm at the Sparke Helmore Lecture Theatres at the ANU. Territory Conference 2010 UNYA ACT's flagship annual event, the Territory Conference, was held from 7-9 May 2010 at the Greenhills Conference Centre in the Cotter. Focusing on the theme of 'International Peace and Security', the two-and-a-half-day residential conference offered a plethora of exciting social and educational activities for delegates. Global Poverty Summit 2010
The Global Poverty Summit, convened on Friday 19 March, attracted 100 young people from across the ACT. Delegates participated in a day of discussion and debate on the issue of global poverty and international development, particularly in relation to the Millenium Development Goals. The day was an exciting, energising, education and empowering experience for all. Year 9-10 Conference 2009 On Friday 30 October 2009, the annual Year 9-10 Conference brought together 110 delegates for a day of engaging activities, including discussion groups, workshops and a mock General Assembly debate. Students were welcomed by Bob McMullan MP and heard a keynote address by Greg Fry from ANU. Pencil cases enclosing UN paraphernalia with given to all, and everyone was treated to a pizza lunch and a giant blue UNYA cake. Thanks to all who attended this amazing event, which was the largest in UNYA ACT's history.
Kofi Trophy 2009
The grand final of UNYA ACT's annual mock Security Council debating competition, the Kofi Annan Shield, took place in the Main Committee Room of Parliament House on Saturday 11 September 2009. Radford College and St Clare's College jointly won the competition, with Canberra Girls' Grammar School placing as runners-up. Congratulations to each of the 30 teams who participated in this, the largest Kofi Trophy competition ever held. |
